RI Statewide Independent Living Council Committee Membership/ Volunteer Opportunities Join the team! The rewards are many: you will meet and work with people of similar interests; you will advance the awareness, philosophy and cause of independent living; you will know your efforts made a difference! DESCRIPTION OF COMMITTEES: STATE PLAN AND MONITORING COMMITTEE This committee is responsible for the development and monitoring of the three-year State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL) on behalf of the Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC). The committee meets in the fall of every year to draft the monitoring (704 Report) report for submission to the federal government by December 31. In addition, it meets January through May every third year to develop the new three-year SPIL. This committee is comprised of several SILC members and representatives of various statewide agencies that provide advocacy, support or services for individuals with disabilities. Committee members are assigned tasks to research and draft in order for the committee to accomplish its work. LEGISLATIVE-ADVOCACY COMMITTEE This committee is responsible for advocacy for independent living issues as directed by the State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL). Committee members are responsible for being aware of pending State legislation that will affect independent living and reporting such issues to the Council. Legislative Committee members advocate for appropriate legislation or changes to pending legislation through written correspondence, telephone calls, and personal testimony. This committee is divided into the following three focus groups: nursing/home transition, transportation and adaptive equipment. FINANCE/RESOURCE COMMITTEE This committee is responsible for the preparation and oversight of the annual budget and fiscal spending in accordance with the SPIL. This committee is also responsible for the Council's human resources, including personnel policies and job descriptions. Committee members have a basic understanding of accounting, budget and business procedures. A business background is most helpful. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE The goal of the Leadership Development Committee is to help consumers learn leadership skills. These skills are necessary tools in advocating for one’s self and/or system change. This committee is responsible for identifying, reviewing and recommending training opportunities. In addition, this committee researches and works with other organizations to help expand these learning opportunities. MEMBERSHIP SUBCOMMITTEE This subcommittee of the Leadership Development Committee is responsible for the recruitment and diversity of the SILC while always being mindful of the necessity of consumer control. Committee members publicize committee/volunteer opportunities and review applications for all committee placements. Membership subcommittee members need to be knowledgeable about the Council, its Committees, Bylaws and recruitment procedures. TIME COMMITMENT: Most committees meet once a month on a Monday or Friday afternoon for approximately 11/2 to 2 hours at the Council's Bristol office. At home work is not expected to exceed an additional 2 to 3 hours per month. Additional time may be given depending upon the volunteer’s wishes and availability. If any of the above committees interest you, we would be delighted to hear from you. Our Executive Director, Camille Pansa, would be glad to discuss and explore the Council and its committees in further detail. Give her call at (401) 253-8949.
