Independent Living Philosophy
Independent Living is a philosophy whose principles empower people with disabilities to manage and control their own lives.
This is made possible through community-based services that assist persons with disabilities so they may better perform daily activities.
Centers for Independent Living
Centers for Independent Living (CILs) are non-profit organizations that offer services in primary areas that are vital to the advancement of Independent Living.
The four core services are:
Advocacy
Information and Referral
Peer Support
Independent Skills Training
Additional services include:
Nursing Home Transition
Assistive Technology
Home Modification
Personal Care Attendants
Assistance with Benefits
Currently, there are two CILs in Rhode Island: Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) and PARI Independent Living Center. Both CILs serve the entire state. Please contact one of the CILs for further information.
