Leadership Development & Advocacy Committee

Members Present:  Christina Battista; Wheeler Clemons; Kristen Connors; Margarita Grome; Jean Lawlor; Anna Liebenow, Co-Chair; Christianne Montoya; Jason Pisano; Heidi Showstead; Vanessa Volz; Mary E. Wambach, Co-Chair.

1.       Welcome new members and Introductions:  Mary Wambach welcomed all. Self-introductions were made.  

  1. Review and approval of October minutes:  previously sent. A motion was made by Margarita Grome and seconded by Christina Battista            to accept the minutes as written. Vote passed unanimously. 
  2. Meeting date changes (Dec., Jan., Feb.): The December meeting will be moved up one week to the 14th.  The January and February meetings will be held on the second week of the month, January 11th and February 8th, due to holidays on the third Mondays. Meeting time will stay the same, Noon2pm.
  3. December holiday celebration: At the December 14th LDA meeting, the first hour, Noon1 p.m., will be a regular business meeting followed by a holiday get-to-together from 1 – 2 p.m. Members were asked to bring a small dessert or snack to share. The event will include the Good, Bad, and Ugly of 2009 and What’s on Your Wish List for Rhode Island?
  4. Educational presentation: Mary Wambach reported that she has contacted Craig Stenning, MHRH, and Gary Alexander, DHS, to co-present about the Global Medicaid Waiver (GMW). To date, she has had no response. Another suggestion made was Linda Katz, Poverty Institute, who could also speak on the GMW. After some discussion, it was decided that an attempt would be made by Mary to contact Commissioner Deborah Gist of RIDOE, with a copy to Camille, to request her as the December Presenter.
  5. Goals and Initiatives/Workshop:  Potential sub-committees were listed for the 20th anniversary of the ADA and several members signed up. The unfinished list is as follows:

Ø     General Event Fundraising:

  1. Disability History Week/press release: Camille Pansa will contact Rep. Eileen Naughton concerning introducing a Disability History Week bill in 2010. The press release will be put on hold. Mary Wambach suggested inviting the Commissioner of Education, Deborah Gist, to the December quarterly meeting. Mary will contact the Commissioner.
  2. Public hearing on health care/funding:  A sub-committee was set-up to address hosting a public hearing on health care possibly partnering with other organizations such as Ocean State Action. Sub-committee members are Mary, Vanessa, Heidi, Kristen, and Wheeler. Suggestions for panelists were community advocates, state legislators, and state officials such as Gary Alexander (DHS).
  3. Sub committees: tabled.
  4. RIPTA Updates: Anna Liebenow’s friend graciously captioned the RIPTA Riders video. The new link will be sent out to all.
  5. SRC updates: A transportation forum is being held on December 4th. Heidi Showstead stated she was interested in attending. Mary Wambach asked that (1) 16(b)2 federal program for van guidelines and (2) insurance for volunteer drivers be addressed.  
  6. Announcements: Members brought in donations and presented Anna Liebenow with a gift basket. Heidi Showstead’s birthday was recognized with a cake.
  7. Old Business: none.
  8. New Business: none.
