STATEWIDE INDEPENDENT LIVING COUNCIL

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

September 2, 2009   12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Members Present:  Liz Graves, Chairperson; Barbara Rozul, Secretary; Heidi Showstead, 2nd Vice Chair (speaker phone); Mary Wambach, LDA Chair.

Staff Present: Camille Pansa, Executive Director; Lisel Rockwood, Program Assistant.

1.     Minutes of July 1, 2009 and August 7, 2009: previously sent.  A motion was made by  Heidi Showstead and seconded by Mary Wambach to accept the minutes as written. Vote passed unanimously.

2.     Review October 2009 calendar: calendar attached. Beginning in October,  Executive Committee meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month and Finance Committee meetings will be held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. The PARI Annual Dinner is on the 15th. The office will be closed on Monday, October 12th , Columbus Day.

     Meeting dates for the writing of the 704 were chosen: October 16th  and                November 13th  from Noon2pm.

3.     Annual meeting agenda/invitees: The agenda was reviewed. Several names were added to the invitation list as a way of reaching out to other organizations and prominent leaders.

4.     Annual reports due date: Reports are due no later than September 21st.

5.     Meeting with Alice Elliot/vote to purchase videos: Several Council members and volunteers met with filmmaker Alice Elliot and viewed her documentary, The Collector on Bedford Street. The  attendees expressed how charming and enlightening the film was, offering a realistic slice of life. They were very impressed with Alice as a genuine person and her insightfulness into the world of people with disabilities. A motion was made by Heidi


     Showstead and seconded by Barbara Rozul to purchase 10 DVDs at a cost of           $200, five of each documentary, The Collector on Bedford Street and Body &    Soul: Diana and Kathy. Vote passed unanimously. The DVDs will be                      multifunctional. They will be used as a library for loan as well as for                      educational presentations, including the Mentoring Program.

6.     Recruitment/ServeRI ad: Two ads will be placed in the ServeRI Volunteer section of the Sunday Providence Journal on September 20th and October 4th respectively. Camille Pansa reported that she met with Micaela Black, a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Information was exchanged about their individual organizations and Micaela has referred a veteran who is disabled for Council membership. Ray Bandusky, RI Disability Law Center, has refered Vanessa Volz as his replacement; his term will expire in September. Heidi Showstead suggested sending information about the Council to past YLF delegates.

7.     State Plan meeting September 11th: Members were reminded about the first meeting. All were encouraged to attend.

8.     IL Conference Sept. 18: The conference will be held at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet. RISILC will sponsor Council members/volunteers who would like to attend.

9.     Corliss walk-a-thon September 12: Mary Wambach reported that Corliss had already exceeded last year’s total due to early donations from vendors. Mary thanked members for their individual sponsorships.

10.       Chairperson’s Report: no report.  

11.       Executive Director Report: Camille Pansa reported that much of her time lately has been centered around recruiting and planning the annual meeting.

12.       Financial Report: previously sent. There is an estimated $1000 surplus for the FY 2009.  

13.       Leadership Development and Advocacy Committee Report: previously  sent.   Mary Wambach reported that the ADA Celebration was a great success and plans are already in place for a next year’s 20th Anniversary of the ADA. It is hoped that the 2010 event will be larger and with the involvement of other organizations to help with the planning and execution of the event. She also noted that the RIVER group has a very active and involved Steering Committee who are working on establishing bylaws and  determining the group’s eligibility for a $15,000 grant from the RIDDC.      

      12.Old Business/New Business/Incoming Mail:  Camille Pansa addressed the             members on the probability of a wide-spread swine flu epidemic starting                    this fall. For safety sake, anyone who are ill should stay home and not                         attend meetings. Everyone will be asked to follow the CDC’s guidelines and                wash their hands or use available antibacterial lotion upon entering the                        office.
